Unit of Study Summary

MARC4003 Master of Architecture (Digital Stream) at the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning University of Sydney explores digital theories and techniques to create architectural designs stimulating human interactions.

The course is taught by Dr Sarah Benton, Dirk Anderson, Damien Butler and Felicity Wheeler. Technical assistance is provided by Gabriele Ulacco.

Site Visit to TimberBuilt - Melbourne

While in Melbourne recently, i made a side trip to the southern suburbs to visit Charlie Hutchings at the not-so-small firm Timberbuilt. Timberbuilt focuses on manufacturing/ fabricating large span structures from LVL product to rival similar steel structures. With significant cost benefits.

Week 11- Panelling

Here are some panelling studies for the buildings’ facades. The parameters involved are the number of panels, dimensions, shapes, and rotation, which are controlled through related sliders. The rotations of panels can result in shadings for the openings.

Week 11

Here are some study models of how we applied the Voronoi System to the site.

The Grasshopper definition works through:

1. Distributing points due to our master plan, access through the site, landscape, slope and the buildings areas (built areas)
2. Creating both Voronoi nurbs cells and straight cells
3. Using a Slider, offsetting cells to provide distance between buildings
4. Defining a surface due to the slope, heights, and wanted views.
5. Referencing the surface in Grasshopper
